Medical Retina β€” First Round

Expert Case Presentations on Common Medical Retinal Conditions

Retinal Cases & Brief Reports is a collection of typical patient cases that involve conditions such as CSCR, nAMD, PCME, and CRVO. Experienced retina specialists evaluate various common retina cases, discuss their management strategies and techniques, and share their insights.

About This Session

The Medical Retina First Round features expert case presentations covering four key areas of medical retinal disease. Each case is presented by a world-renowned specialist, followed by a panel discussion with all speakers.

  • Case of nAMD: Diagnosis and long-term management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration with anti-VEGF therapy.
  • Case of PCME: Prevention, evaluation, and treatment of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema β€” from topical therapies to PPV.
  • Case of RVO: Diagnosis, imaging, and treatment strategies for retinal vein occlusions including anti-VEGFs and steroids.
  • Case of CSCR: Comprehensive evaluation of central serous chorioretinopathy with multimodal imaging and clinical insights.

πŸ’Š Case Presentations

Four expert case presentations covering the spectrum of medical retinal disease, followed by a panel discussion.

CASE 1

πŸ‘οΈ Case of nAMD

nAMD is a long-life disease. Despite rapid and amazing response to Anti-VEGF, recurrence is inevitable. Vision can be preserved if the patient is properly managed (T&E vs PRN).

Speaker: Dr. Magdy Moussa
Professor of Ophthalmology & Vitreoretinal Consultant, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University, Egypt β€’ Vice President of Egyptian Vitreoretinal Society
CASE 2

πŸ’Š Case of PCME

Prevention and treatment of PCME through careful clinical evaluation and interpretation of ancillary tests. Treatment with topical agents, periocular steroids, or PPV for persistent cases.

Speaker: Dr. Ameen Marashi, MD, SBO
Syrian ophthalmologist, retina specialist, published author
CASE 3

πŸ”¬ Case of RVO

Retinal vein occlusions are an important cause of decreased vision. Diagnosis is clinical with imaging studies to assess severity and guide treatment with anti-VEGFs or steroids.

Speaker: Dr. Guillermo Salcedo Villanueva
Ophthalmology and Retina Professor, AsociaciΓ³n Para Evitar la Ceguera en MΓ©xico β€’ Level 1 Researcher, National Council of Science and Technology
CASE 4

🩺 Case of CSCR

A comprehensive look at CSCR β€” check a good anamnesis and keep your mind open. Use all imaging modalities for a wide view of atypical presentations.

Speaker: Dr. Danilo Lannetta
Research Fellowship in VR at Weill Cornell β€’ Adjunct Professor, University of Bologna β€’ VR Consultant β€’ Member of Vitreo Buckle Society, AAO

πŸ“ Key Takeaways

Case of nAMD

nAMD is a long-life disease. Despite rapid and amazing response to Anti-VEGF, recurrence is inevitable. Vision can be preserved if the patient is properly managed (T&E vs PRN).

Case of PCME

Prevention and treatment of PCME can be done by careful clinical evaluation and interpretation of ancillary tests. Although treatment with topical agents is usually enough, periocular steroids can resolve the cystoid macular edema by monitoring IOP. However, persistent or tractional PCME mandates PPV.

Case of RVO

Retinal vein occlusions are an important cause of decreased vision. The diagnosis is clinical; however, imaging studies should be performed to obtain more information about severity and guide treatment decisions. Macular edema treatment should ideally be guided by OCT. Ultra-wide field retinal images and fluorescein angiography add information about possible ischemia. Anti-VEGFs have proven to be more effective than steroids.

Case of CSCR

Check a good anamnesis and keep your mind open. Atypical cases confirm that we must have a wide view of our patients and use all available imaging modalities.
